“A DISRUPTIVE VISIT TO THE CARDIOLOGIST”

What is a Role Play? As used in this context, a Role Play is a reenactment of a medical appointment wherein only the Healthcare Professional, Patient (and other players, if applicable) have a script. The Interpreter does NOT have any script while interpreting and will interpret between the Healthcare Professional and patient using English and the native language of the patient. The class is conducted in English by Zoom. The class is broken down into groups called “breakout rooms” according to the native language of the patient. There are 3 or more ‘players’ in each breakout room (excluding the Coordinator who rotates among the different breakout rooms and offers advice/answers questions, as needed).

Here is a summary of this particular Role Play called “A DISRUPTIVE VISIT TO THE CARDIOLOGIST”: THE CARDIOLOGIST WELCOMES THE PATIENT AND THE PATIENT’S DISRUPTIVE SISTER. THE PATIENT IS EXPERIENCING FATIGUE AND SWELLING IN THE LEGS AND THROAT. EVEN THINGS LIKE COOKING AND VACUUMING HAVE BECOME DIFFICULT TASKS FOR THE PATIENT. AT TIMES SHE FEELS LIKE SHE LACKS OXYGEN AND HER HEART OFTEN BEATS IRREGULARLY. THE CARDIOLOGIST ORDERS A STRESS TEST AND SHARES WITH THE PATIENT HER/HIS FEARS. THE PATIENT’S SISTER IS CONTINUALLY DISRUPTIVE CREATING A CHALLENGE FOR INTERPRETER & HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL ALIKE. THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE PATIENT’S MEDICAL HISTORY TO DETECT CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO HER/HIS CURRENT PROBLEM. THE INTERPRETER MUST DEAL WITH COMPLICATED MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY, A DISRUPTIVE FAMILY MEMBER, A CRYING PATIENT, AND UNHELPFUL REMARKS MADE BY THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL. RATED ADVANCED 3 FOR 3.0 CEU.
