ZOOMINAR 0400: “A POSSIBLE CASE OF LYME DISEASE”
“A POSSIBLE CASE OF LYME DISEASE”
What is a Role Play? As used in this context, a Role Play is a reenactment of a medical appointment wherein only the doctor, patient (and other players, if applicable) have a script. The Interpreter does NOT have any script and will interpret between the doctor and patient using English and the native language of the patient. The class is broken down into groups called “breakout rooms” according to the native language of the patient. There are at least 3 ‘players’ in each breakout room (excluding the Instructor who rotates among the different breakout rooms and offers advice/answers questions, as needed).
Here is a summary of this particular Role Play called “A Possible Case of Lyme Disease”:
(Medical literature sometimes calls this disease “Lyme Disease” in English, and sometimes “Lyme’s Disease”. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) calls it “Lyme Disease”. VLS will follow the CDC’s lead and refer to it by the name “Lyme Disease”).
(Lyme Disease is not a medical specialty. A doctor that treats Lyme Disease may be a Neurologist, Rheumatologist, Pediatrician, Infectious Disease doctor, Primary Care doctor or even others. The patient should make certain that, in whatever specialty, the doctor should bear the initials “LLMD” in addition to whatever other titles. “LLMD” means Lyme-Literate Medical Doctor)
A woman is referred by her primary care doctor to a neurologist for treatment of a possible case of Lyme Disease.
The patient is experiencing rash, fever, weakness, generalized muscular pain, migraine headaches and oxygen deficiency. The patient is eager to return to work, when she is able.
The neurologist explains that there may be secondary infections which can delay her return to work. The Healthcare Professional explains the role of Borrelia Burgdorferi and Bartonella. Lyme disease can awaken the Epstein-Barr virus if the patient already has that virus in her body. If it awakens, it can cause chronic fatigue syndrome.
The patient is confused and overwhelmed by this information. At one point the Interpreter interrupts the session and suggests that the neurologist use simpler language since the patient wasn’t understanding everything. The neurologist obliges but later reverts back to a higher register (more technical language). The Role-Play ends with arrangements being made for a blood test to determine conclusively if the patient has Lyme disease or not. Rated ADVANCED 3 for 3.0 CEU.
